Pieces from the Historic Berlin Wall

The construction of a 4-meter high concrete wall, to divide the city of Berlin into East Berlin and West Berlin, began in August 1961. The wall remained as a symbol of cold war until 1989. On November 9, 1989, weeks after the resignation of East Germany Prime Minister, thousands of East Berliners gathered at the gates. Cheered by West Berliners, they started breaking the wall apart - a historic moment which was the first step in reuniting the two sections of Germany.

This event featured in various best-sellers as one of the turning points in the history of modern world. (The last one I read was in Thomas L. Friedman's The World Is Flat.)

Various pieces and sections of the Berlin Wall were brought to the United States and are displayed in museums. I acquired a couple of pieces to add to my collection.
